Carly Neilson
Carly completed the Classical Dressage Training Program in Portugal at the Escola de Equitacao Alcainca School of Classical Dressage while in college with George Malleroni. Her internship in 2010 with Betsy Steiner in New Jersey enabled her to continue to work on her riding and training skills as well as gain insight and business perspective in the financial and managerial requirements necessary to run a professional high-end equine facility.
Over the past ten years Carly has been training horses for clients and specializing in young horses as well as resale horses. From 2015-2017 she assisted with the training of young Lusitano horses of Casa Lusitana where she received instruction with Jorge Gabriel. Additionally during that time this busy equestrian professional worked for two years as the project manager for Equestrian Living Magazine which put her in contact with other successful equestrians and businesses throughout the U.S.
Carly was the show manager for Longfellow Farm’s first USDF/USEF rated dressage show in 2015 which led to the decision to hold two rated dressage shows in 2016-2019. Despite a busy schedule, Carly fills her time training client horses and has a large amount of experience taking on sales prospects as well as buying and selling horses for clients. Her passion is bringing along her own Danish mare Manilla and Dutch mare Leina, and is excited to get into the show ring this season!
Carly obtained her Gold medal in 2023 aboard Didolein, lovingly known as “Leina”, whom she has trained herself from a third level horse. Carly believes in making sure horses are well rounded and sees the importance of variety in the training program including cross training, cavalettis, and trail riding. She finds importance in ground manners and respect in hand and finds a consistent correlation to how those manners will then translate under saddle. A horse that is aware of its body and respectful of yours will more often than not also respect you in the tack.
Currently Carly trains regularly with Jacalyn Smith and clinics with Conrad Schumacher, Barend Heilbron, Susanne Hamilton, and recently Rob Waine.
